I had my first rehearsal for The Music Man today! My I was scared!!! Everyone was very nice and friendly though. We worked on pretty much every ensemble number in the show and then Pick A Little Talk A Little. The music man is a little harder than I thought, but we'll manage. I DID get to fill one of my dreams though. The wonderful gentlemen who play the Barbershop Quartet were sitting around during a break and singing and asked if anyone knew Will I Ever Tell You and being utterly unlike me I said I did and got to sing it with them!! My nerves got to me so I didn't sound my best, but it was still a thrill!!! Especially since Marion is a role I'll probably never get to play unless I have a very open minded director. I just hope I can do Ethel justice! I figure with the Pick A Little Ladies she's a younger (all the other ladies are in their 30's at least), unmarried woman and kind of looks up to them. Clearly a follower. I just have to negotiate between the jolly gal she seems to be a lot of the time and her distaste for Marion (in the beginning). It's very teen girl behavior. Who is Ethel? Here's a clip of the woman who played her both on Broadway and in the film version: @ 1:49. Clearly I WOULD play rule with Tuba backing me up while dancing. If I even dance in this production!
